Smokers in Bulgaria Quit as Cigarettes Price Hikes
Three per cent of Bulgaria’s smokers quit the habit in 2011, mainly because of increases in the prices of cigarettes, a survey by the country’s Health Ministry has found. Ten per cent of Bulgarian smokers say that they intend to stop in coming months. They say that they will do so when a planned mid-year full ban on smoking in public places comes into effect.
Bulgaria already has legislated limitations on smoking in restaurants and other public places, although currently existing rules are frequently broken.
Men predominate among smokers in Bulgaria, the survey found. Forty-six per cent of Bulgarian men smoke.
Among Bulgarians aged 26 to 40, 55 per cent smoke.
Average cigarette consumption among Bulgarians is 15 a day.
A typical popular brand of cigarettes in Bulgaria costs 4.60 leva (about 2.30 euro) a packet of 20.
