Cigarettes Smoking Banned at All Chicago City Colleges
Starting March 1, 2012, tobacco use will be prohibited on all property of the campuses of the City Colleges of Chicago. The City Colleges of Chicago is the largest community college system in Illinois consisting of seven colleges and seven satellite locations and a district office.
According to The Chicago Tribune, the Board of Trustees of Chicago City Colleges approved this decision which totally prohibits cheap Rich cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products. The decision will impact 120,000 students and 5,800 faculty and staff.
Illinois Senator Dick Durbin (D) has been one of the strongest anti-tobacco advocates in Congress.
On November 30, 2011, U.S. Senators Durbin, and Frank Lautenberg applauded the Obama administration for its decision to appeal a court ruling that blocks the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from requiring new graphic warning labels on cigarette packages and advertisements.
In June, 2011, the FDA chose new graphic labels that send a tough message about the dangers of smoking. The nine warning labels chosen were scheduled for use on all cigarette packages and advertisements. These senators were joined by Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Jeff Merkely (D-Oregon), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) in sending a letter to the Department of Justice and the FDA requesting the immediate appeal of the court’s decision to block the new warning labels
